“Government should not rely on inclusion of the estimated generating capacity of the [Severn] barrage to reach the 2020 renewable target”.

24/10/08

The Stop the Barrage NOW campaign welcomes the report from the House of Lords European Union Committee that the “Government should not rely on inclusion of the estimated generating capacity of the [Severn] barrage to reach the 2020 renewable target”.

'The EU’s Target for Renewable Energy: 20% by 2020’ report, which was published today [Friday 24 October 2008], highlights the growing concern among our supporters that the Government and the newly created Department for Energy and Climate Change have become fixated on a barrage scheme that is incredibly costly in the first instance, is an environmental nightmare to the estuaries wildlife and biodiversity, and will be extremely damaging to the region’s economy - especially the maritime community.

We believe that it has become imperative for the Government to push more resources into supporting the rapidly developing wave of tidal technology. This could produce much more than the current estimates suggest, and do so in a fundamentally less destructive manner than the barrage.
